Citation Management Software

This guide introduces two freely available citation managers, Mendeley and Zotero, that enable organization and formatting of citations.

Save your sources

Save yourself time and enjoy the relative ease of using citation management software:

  1. Add files you have saved on your computer;
  2. Citations can be saved using an internet browser plugin while you are researching; or,
  3. Library databases have additional Export functionality to facilitate saving resources.

Learn how to save content to your citation manager in the examples below.

Drag and drop PDFs from your computer.

Zotero Connector* - compatible with Chrome, Firefox and Safari

*The Zotero Connector icon changes depending on whether you are looking at the record for a book, journal article, webpage or some other source. The icon in the above example is displaying a book.

Zotero Connector automatically saves sources to your library; there is no intermediary screen like there is with the Mendeley Web Importer. Edit saved citations in your Zotero library either via the cloud or in your desktop application.

Mendeley Web Importer - compatible with Chrome, Firefox, IE and Safari

Once you click on the Web Importer icon, edit your selection(s) and click to save the citation(s) to your library.
