Use the word processor plugin to create formatted in-text citations and bibliographies. The plugin should automatically install when you download Mendeley or Zotero for your operating system.
Instructions for using the word processor plugin for both citation managers are provided below.
The Zotero plugin works with Microsoft Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice. Click "Document Preferences" to select your citation style. If your style is not listed, click on "Manage Styles..." and then "Get additional styles..." in the box that pops up.
After selecting "Add/Edit Citation" in the plugin, a pop-up search box will appear. Search by title or author to locate items within your library.
When adding citations, clicking on a citation within your search box reveals additional options to add pages numbers, add a prefix or suffix, and suppress the authors. Use "Suppress Author" when referring to a citation directly within your paper.
For example, a typical in-text citation will look like this: (Smith, 2010).
When "Suppress Author" is selected, that in-text citation would appear as: (2010).
The Mendeley plugin works with Microsoft Word and LibreOffice. Pictured below is the plugin in Microsoft Word for Windows, which is available from the References tab in MS Word. Click here to see the plugin for Word for Mac and LibreOffice. Use the drop-down Style menu (to which the red arrow is pointing in the image below) to select your citation style. If your style is not one of the default styles, click on "More styles..." to find and download the style you need.
After selecting "Insert Citation" in the plugin, a pop-up search box will appear. Search by title or author to locate items within your library.
Insert Bibliography will format your citations into a Reference list only after you have inserted citations within the text of your document.
