Check out the Finding Books tab of this guide for some general search strategies! However there are a couple of tricks to make it more specific!
Once you perform a search, for example "gay teenagers," first, sort your results by "Newest First." This will give you texts with the most up to date outlooks by their publication date. Then look over to the "Tweak your results" filters and find "Location." You can then narrow your search to just the Ballenger Teachers Center.
Most books for youth will be located there.
You might notice also that the entry for your book has a lot of "subjects", these are Library of Congress Headings (for more on their use check either Finding Books or Finding Articles). Some of these topics might have a little > or / symbol next to them. That means they are a combination of two headings.
When you are using Library of Congress headings to search, try adding some of the examples below to your search terms to narrow it.
Each link will go to a list of materials in the library collection with those terms in the subjects headings.
There are many more! It is worth noting that because these are standardized terms, they may not reflect the most common or correct term, especially in regards to transgender individuals. Many older works may use the heading "transsexual", or "sex change" alone, and not the new standards of Transgender and Gender-affirming surgery which many newer works would have.
