What is in the Podcasting Studio?

Inside the CSI Podcasting Studio:

  • RODECaster Pro Soundboard with four microphone set-ups
  • Sterling SP150 condenser microphones (4)
  • Tascam TH-200X studio headphones (4)

Inside the Third Floor Podcasting Carrels:

  • RODECaster Pro Duo Soundboard
  • Sterling SP150 condenser microphones (2)
  • Tascam TH-200X studio headphones (2)

The CSI also provides a laptop with Audacity downloaded on it in the studio to view, edit, and save your recording (the third-floor podcasting carrels do not have laptops provided). For either the Podcasting Room in the CSI or the Podcasting Carrels on the third floor, you are welcome to bring your own laptop or use a laptop checked out on the fourth floor. We also have a FAQ to consult while you use our soundboards and it can be accessed through the following link: About: Center for Student Innovation at Booth Library (eiu.edu)

Recording With The RODEcaster Pro

For basics on how to use our soundboards, please consult our website at About: Center for Student Innovation at Booth Library (eiu.edu)

The Rodecaster Pro allows you to customize the sound settings for each microphone in use, monitor your voice quality, and use live sound effects. For an in depth guide exploring all of the RODEcaster Pro's features, check out the official manual below. If you are having issues with the RODEcaster you can also access this troubleshooting guide below.

Free Sound Editing Software

Audacity is a sound editing software that the CSI encourages students to use as they begin to record and edit their podcasts. It is already downloaded on the computer inside of the Podcasting Studio. Audacity is an easy-to-use, open source, multi-track audio editor and recorder for Windows, macOS, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. If you are unfamiliar with Audacity then please watch the video above or check out the Audacity Wiki.

Garageband is only available on iOS and Apple devices; however, GarageBand is a fully equipped music creation studio with a complete sound library that includes instruments, presets for guitar and voice, and an incredible selection of session drummers and percussionists. If you would like to learn more about how to record podcasts with GarageBand, then click here! Or click here to read the GarageBand manual.

Adobe Audition is a free program for EIU students included in the Adobe Creative Cloud. It works similarly to Audacity where one can edit audio files on separate tracks. If you would like to learn how to use Audition, please click here. We are also offering a Learning Lab on Audio Production using Audacity and Audition. If you wish to attend the Leaning Lab, please register by clicking the following link: Audio Production - LibCal - Eastern Illinois University Booth Library

Using Audacity

If you are new or unfamiliar with Audacity, please utilize the links and videos below to learn more about our favorite sound editing software

Three ways to get started with Podcasting in the CSI:

  1. Make a reservation. On the CSI Podcasting Studio Reservation form, let us know if you have experience and what your goals are. We will meet with you and introduce you to operating the RODECaster. Alternatively, you can make a reservation for the third-floor podcasting carrels here (the carrels only have a two-mic setup).
  2. Stop by one of our Discovery Hours sessions to ask questions about Podcasting in the CSI.
  3. Attend a Podcasting 101 Workshop. You can register at the following link: CSI Equipment Workshops: Center for Student Innovation at Booth Library (eiu.edu)
