Introduction to the Library Catalog

How to use the EIU library catalog to find information

Refining Your Results

Tweak Your Results

To narrow your results after an initial search, use the Tweak your results options on the right-hand side of the screen.

Notice the following options:

  1. Sort by: By default, the most relevant results appear at the top of the page. You can change this to sort by publication date, title, or author.
  2. Availability: You can limit results to only those available online, or to those held physically by the library.
  3. Subject: Additional ways to limit your results include by subject, author, and creation date, among others. Notice the option to omit results from displaying, by clicking the red deselection mark that appears to the right of an entry, such as for Juvenile Works in the screenshot below.

Advanced Search

To do a more specific search, used the Advanced Search. You can toggle between the Advanced Search and Simple Search display.

Some options within the Advanced Search include:

  1. Search by subject, title, or author, among other options.
  2. Material Type: Limit results to include only books, videos, or sound recordings, among other options.
  3. Start Date/End Date: Limit results to a specified publication date or date range. The sample search in the screenshot below will return results published from 2010 to present.
