Inclusive Excellence: LGBTQIA+, Homophobia, and Transphobia

This guide is to serve as a place for individuals on the Eastern Illinois University campus to acquire knowledge regarding inclusive excellence, to introduce the campus community to some of the terms used within, and to provide access to library resources

Introduction and Definitions

LGBTQIA+
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual Plus - A common acronym but far from the only one to be used to refer to people whose experience of sex and gender do not conform to the heterosexual and cisgender norms of western culture. Other acronyms include LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender), GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender), LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer), LGBTTIQQ2SA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Intersex, Queer, Questioning, Two Spirit, and Asexual), and QUILTBAG (queer and questioning, intersex, lesbian, transgender and two-spirit, bisexual, asexual and ally, and gay and genderqueer). There are many other acronyms that attempt to append other identities, but there are also acronyms that attempt to be inclusive without listing each identity individually, such as MOGAI (Marginalized Orientations, Gender Alignments and Intersex).

Queer Undefined and this glossary are both good resources for looking up identities and other terminology commonly used in discussing sexuality and gender.
