Afrofuturism and Afro Punk

Explores the literary, artistic and musical genres dubbed Afrofuturism and Afro Punk

Defining Afrofuturism and Afropunk

Coined in 1993 by Mark Dery to describe science fiction literature with African American themes, The term Afrofuturism has come to stand in for a broad range of speculative fiction written by African Diasporic authors, although it also describes a cultural aesthetic crossing many forms or artistic expression exploring the intersection of African Diasporic culture and technology.

Not to be conflated into the perhaps wider category of Afrofuturism, Afro Punk describes both the Black musicians and artists that have contributed and shaped punk rock music, culture, fashion and the D.I.Y. lifestyle, and also the cultural expression of black people on the or margins of the dominant culture.  In recent years AfroPunk has become an international festival of music, art, film, fashion and culture.
