How to Select an Information Source

This guide will help you determine what kind of information is appropriate for the type of research and writing you need to do.

Where should I look?

When you are given a writing assignment that requires you to do research, you need to figure out what kind of information to use. Who are you writing for? What is the purpose of the piece? Are you writing a feature for a magazine, a blog post, a critical analysis, or a scientific report? Depending on the kind of writing you do, the sources you search for and the places you will begin your research can vary quite a bit.

Each page of this guide will describe different sources of information, and provide some criteria about the audience, level of writing, length, and currency of the information in each type of publication.

Examples of each are provided, and resources for where to retrieve that type of information are linked on each page.
