Finding Books

Search for books in the EIU Library Catalog by author, title, keyword or subject

LC Subject Headings are classifications agreed upon by all US libraries and be an invaluable tool when you are searching for information. While keyword searches may bring up more titles, LC Subject searching can bring up more accurate lists of works specifically related to your field of study.

Examples of Subject Headings searches:

  • Hobbies
  • Leisure
  • Leisure studies
  • National parks
  • Outdoor recreation
  • Parks and recreation
  • Play
  • Recreation
  • Recreation areas
  • Tourism

Once you have some search results, it can be useful to narrow them down using "Tweak your results" in the right-hand column.

Catalog results will include print books, e-books, and other types of resources.

Browsing the Bookstacks

The Library of Congress Classification System arranges books by subject, so browsing the shelves in Reference (3000 Level, Booth Library) or in the Bookstacks (3000 Level south for GVs and 1000 level south for the "R" call number range) in these call number areas will introduce you to the library's collections in Kinesiology and related fields.  This is a very large collection, so you may find it more useful to search the Online Catalog to locate titles on specific subjects, for example: "Outdoor Recreation" or "Leisure."
