BTC: Diverse Children's Literature

Awarded by the American Indian Library Association, the American Indian Youth Literature Award is to honor the very best writing and illustration by Native Americans and Indigenous people of North America.

Awarded by the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, the Asian/Pacific American Award is to honor and recognize individual work about Asian/Pacific Americans and their heritage, based on literacy and artistic merit.

The Coretta Scott King Award is given to an African American author, illustrator, or author/illustrator for a body of his/hers published books for children and/or young adults.

The Pura Belpre Awards are presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

The Schneider Family Book Awards honor an author or an illustrator for a book that embodies an artistic expression of the disability experience for child and adolescent audiences.

The Stonewall book Award is given annually to English-Language works of exceptional merit for children or teens relating to the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, or Transgender experience.

Awarded by the Association of Jewish Libraries, the Sydney Taylor Book Award is presented annually to outstanding books for children and teens that authentically portray the Jewish experience.

The Amelia Bloomer Project, a committee of the Feminist Task Force of the Social Responsibilities Round Table, compiles the Amelia Bloomer List, an annual annotated book list (or bibliography) of well-written and well-illustrated books with significant feminist content, intended for young readers (ages birth through 18).

CLASP founded the Américas Award in 1993 to encourage and commend authors, illustrators and publishers who produce quality children’s and young adult books that portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinx in the United States, and to provide teachers with recommendations for classroom use. CLASP offers up to two annual book awards, together with a commended list of titles.

The Children’s Africana Book Awards (CABA) are presented annually to the authors and illustrators of the best children’s and young adult books on Africa published or republished in the U.S. Africa Access and the Outreach Council of the African Studies Association (ASA) created CABA in 1991 to encourage the publication and use of accurate, balanced children’s materials about Africa.

The Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities (DADD) of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) in collaboration Brigham Young University sponsor the Dolly Gray Children’s Literature Award to recognize effective, enlightened portrayals of individuals with developmental disabilities in children's books. Every even year, an award is presented to an author and illustrator (if appropriate) of a children's picture book and/or a children's chapter book.

Celebrating outstanding new bookmakers to advance diversity in children’s literature for a better world.

Since 1997, Empowering Latino Futures has celebrated literature through its book awards. The objective has been to recognize the greatness in both Latino writers and in non-Latinos who are writing on Latino topics.

Books may embrace the following themes in their plot: Reconciling opposite viewpoints; solving emotional problems nonviolently, so that a child may learn from his experience what is involved in the problem, what his responsibility is toward it, and how it can be handled with increasingly satisfactory results for all concerned; breaking down of suspicion and fear; overcoming of prejudice against things and people and ideas that are different; understanding of destructive impulses: fear, greed, jealousy, treachery, deceit, and insecurity which breeds them; approaching life constructively through sympathy, understanding, and security.

The Middle East Outreach Council established the Middle East Book Award in 1999 to recognize books for children and young adults that contribute meaningfully to understanding of the Middle East.

The Outstanding International Books (OIB) committee is charged with selecting international books that are deemed most outstanding of those published during the calendar year. For the purposes of this honor list, the term "international book" is used to describe a book published or distributed in the United States that originated or was first published in a country other than the U.S.

The Rainbow Book List is created by the Rainbow Book List Committee of the Rainbow Round Table of the American Library Association. Originally a joint project between the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Roundtable and the Social Responsibilities Round Table, the Rainbow Book List presents an annual bibliography of quality books with significant and authentic GLBTQ content, which are recommended for people from birth through eighteen years of age.

The Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature, also known as “The Walter,” is awarded by We Need Diverse Books and celebrates the legacy of author Walter Dean Myers (1937-2014).
